Hypocrite

Keefieboy, the Webmaster of Dubai (below), reported a few days ago that none other than the Minister of Information and Culture of the UAE had intervened in a police integrity case with "a demand for transparency". Now, the responsible minister is one Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, better known to TYR readers as the half-owner of Santa Cruz Imperial and Flying Dolphin Airlines, companies repeatedly cited by UN Expert Panel reports on arms sales to West African failed states. There's a reason why Viktor Bout gets away with murder in the UAE, and His Nibs is at the very least on the list of plausible suspects. (Jamestown Terrorism Monitor link (pdf)

For him to speak of "transparency" is incredible hypocrisy. Unless he meant it as in "transparent self-justification" or "transparent manoeuvre", I suppose.

At least, though, the police there have their priorities quite right.

Gulf News Throws Teddy out of Pram
Yow. Here's something you do not often see in the esteemed pages of this reputed publication. A story in yesterday's Gulf News really laid in to the Chief of Ajman Police, accusing him of twice denying the truth of items reported in Gulf News.

"The Ajman police chief should also not forget that the leadership of the UAE, including General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and the UAE Minister of Defence, has always called for transparency and freedom of the press to obtain information.

"Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Information and Culture, has also called for transparency in public issues.

"These calls, however, are met with deaf ears in some departments.

"We need to see these words converted to deeds, especially by law enforcement authorities in Ajman."

In case you don't know, Ajman is a tiny little backwater on the other side of Sharjah. The fact that it has its own Police Department at all is remarkable.
